A SMART Operative Guide for Working with Teeth

SMART Operative Guide for Working with Teeth

This book presents the evidence based research for applying the medical model of care to restorative dentistry:

  • Pharmacological adjuncts to oral hygiene.
  • Differentiating between the restoration of carious and non carious dental lesions.
  • Techniques that maximize the longevity and predictability of adhesive dentistry including the fibre reinforcement of composite resin.
  • Demonstrating the ability of carious dentine to heal and the benefits of pharmacologically assisting the process.
  • Identifying the pharmacological materials available for caries management, their benefits and disadvantages, including comprehensive instructions to maximize their effectiveness.
  • Techniques for remineralizing initial occlusal and approximal enamel caries.
  • Techniques for the restoration of occlusal lesions with supported and unsupported cusps.
  • Techniques for the restoration of approximal lesions with the marginal ridge intact or missing.
  • Restoration of caries affected deciduous teeth.
  • Pharmacological adjuncts to improve the predictability of endodontic treatment.
  • At the conclusion of each described technique is a concise step by step summary of each procedure.

This is a book for all restorative dentists who are seeking a less stressful and more rewarding way to practice dentistry.

Apart from his broad clinical base, he is an Adjunct Professor of Rural Oral Health at La Trobe University. He has been published in Quintessence International, Australian Dental Journal and Journal of Periodontal Research.

He has produced a series of clinical videos and webinars that have had well over 1 million views on social media. He has published over 150 dental articles, some of which have been translated and published internationally in a number of languages.

He has been a consultant to a number of dental manufacturers and President of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Dental Association.

RAYMOND L. BERTOLOTTI
DDS, PhD

During my dental career, I have seen restorative dentistry make some remarkable transitions. Beginning with the ability to utilize adhesion to all dental surfaces, conservation of tooth structure became my priority.

Dental pharmacology has emerged as an alternative to amputation dentistry, where pharmacologically based technologies enable the use of established medical principles to treat an infectious disease. This approach is in harmony with conservation of tooth structure. The combination of adhesion and pharmacology has enabled clinicians to perform tooth conserving dentistry that was previously only a dream.

For many years, Geoff Knight has been a leader in the fields of “minimally invasive esthetic dentistry” and “dental pharmacology”. He is well known for very high standards of delivery of these services. Late in his dental career, Geoff pursued further study, earning a PhD degree. His thesis is titled “The pharmacological management of dentine to protect against plaque microorganism degradation”. His studies are the scientific basis of this book.

Contrary to common beliefs, Geoff has demonstrated that the hourly returns for the practice are not negatively impacted by using the pharmacology approach. My experience is that it can actually increase practice income by happy patient repeats and referrals. Another aspect of the pharmacological approach is that good dental care becomes more affordable for patients than are many high tech treatments.

I have known Geoff for many years now. I have learned much from him and have been impressed by his ingenuity and technical skills. I am very pleased to see this book published as a collection of his clinical experience and research. It will serve as not only as a compelling introduction to pharmacologically based technologies but also but also a detailed reference source.

Geoff Knight has created a unique book based on Minimal Intervention/Biomimetic concepts using his research to support the many clinical techniques he has developed to take advantage of advanced dental pharmacology and dental materials that are available to us today. It ranges from managing a diseased oral biofilm through the tooth protection techniques using silver diamine fluoride/potassium iodide combine with glass ionomers and composite, to using fibre reinforcing to restore more damaged teeth.

One of the more biomimetic materials we have available to us is Glass Ionomer in all its formulations. Geoff has an ability to explain not only the clinical applications, but also to support these techniques with unique and leading research. This creates a deeper understanding that allows clinicians to adapt techniques to meet individual or unique clinical situations. This is one of the “must have” books if you are serious about Minimal Intervention Dentistry.
