Dental composites have been a part of dentistry for over 60 years and in that time they’ve come to revolutionise the way that clinicians approach restorative dentistry. Where once silver amalgam for fillings and metal or gold for the likes of crowns seemed to be the only viable choices when it came to restorations, today’s well-informed patients are actively seeking out strong, non-metal composite alternatives that will give them the aesthetic results they’ve been looking for.
For clinicians, there’s now an abundance of composite restorative materials to choose from for every type of restoration. But the key is to find a material that can match the flexural strength, durability and appearance of natural teeth – and that material is Luna.
Why Luna?
Luna from SDI Ltd. is an anterior/posterior nanohybrid composite indicated for:
- Direct anterior and posterior restorations (Class I, II, III, IV, V)
- Core build-ups
- Indirect inlays, onlays and veneers
- Splinting
- Composite and porcelain repair
- Sandwich technique with glass ionomers
Luna has superior compressive strength of over 343 MPa coupled with a high flexural strength of 136 MPa which makes it ideal for use in stress bearing areas and to withstand the forces of mastication.
Luna’s superior strength is down to an innovative combination of nano and micron particles. The nano particles ensure excellent polishability and help to maintain a smooth surface, while the micron particles work to ensure strength and durability.
The low volumetric shrinkage (2.88%) of Luna minimises post-operative sensitivity and microleakage, reducing the potential for development of secondary caries. The material’s filler load is 77% by weight coupled with a radiopacity higher than dentine making it easy to detect on X-rays and gives clear visibility of the margins.
Making life easier
As well as the science behind the product, a composite needs good handling characteristics and to be easy to work with in order to deliver patient comfort and faster treatment time with minimal aerosol generation.
Luna’s non-stick handling makes it easy to manipulate, easy to sculpt without slumping or pull back, and easy to pack. Together with its creamy consistency this makes it easy to layer the composite without voids.
Mix and match
Luna’s extensive shade range for use in the anterior or posterior dentition offers 13 universal shades matched to the traditional Vita system plus a choice of speciality shades:
- Dentine shades – OA2, OA3, OA3.5
- Bleach shade
- Extra bleach shade
- Incisal shade
Luna exhibits a chameleon effect, enabling it to take on the shade of the tooth surrounding it which along with natural fluorescence and opalescence allows for seamless blending to natural tooth structure.
